From the beginning I have to say that I do not like hunts in the fence! I don’t know where fenced area hunts have been invented, but for sure it a reality of our times. We can not ignore it. The most known are big fenced areas in South Africa. I never hunted there, but I am tempted! As all of you, I have seen videos, read hunting forums and…received a lot of emails. I think fenced area in South Africa and Namibia are almost wild hunt, or most of them are. So thumbs up!
And since we are toking about fenced area, we have to touch the sensitive subject of released lion for hunting. Good or bad? Ethical or not? I am here in the position of 99% of the hunters. I will love to do it in the wild but no way I can afford it. As always I am honest with my readers and clients… I would do it? YES! I WOULD DO IT! So, thumbs up!
In the spring of 2023 I had a couple of US hunters for roebucks that told me, they hunt exclusively in the fenced area in USA. They hunted for meat and they hunted also for exotics species mostly. That was there first hunt abroad.
Very good hunters! They know how to “read” the wind, how to stalk, judge the trophies(even they saw roebucks for the first time), judge the distance. And all those skills are learned from fenced area. So, thumbs up!
Now, let’s go back at what I know most, hunting in our beloved country Romania.
Comparing with other European countries, Romania have very few fenced areas. The most known are the fenced area near Bucharest for huge red stag, fallow bucks and mouflon and the famous private fenced area of our former tennis player Ion Tiriac.
My experience for hunting in fenced area is limited. However, before Covid I use to have one or two groups for wild boar driven hunt in fenced area and few hunters for red, fallow and mouflon.
Let’t start with driven hunt for wild boars. The fenced areas are small in Romania, 400 to 600 hectares maximum.
The first day with 3 or 4 drives is great. To be honest, I can’t tell the difference between wild open areas and fenced area. Except of course, number of the wild boars and the fact that most of the hunters have shooting chances.
But in the second day, after the first drive or second drive, the wild boars are not coming as in the wild. They are very clever and they know in the middle of the fence is dangerous, so they fallow the fence in line. Not very pleasant.
So, wild boar driven hunt for one day in fence is a big yes, two days is ok, but three day is a big no.
One thing that have to be mention here is not all of the fenced areas are the same. You must understand that in a fenced usually 6 to 10 days per year are made. The rest is quiet. In same areas the rangers that feed the boars are not very clever, to say in a nice way. They feed the animals at the same hour, in the same place, encouraging them to be friendly. In this case, the wild boars will became domestically boar. No way, those boars will run full speed like the one in the wild when they are push by the same rangers who feed them.
So make sure you talk with your outfitter before you book a hunt in the fenced area and ask him about this issue.
For deer, I have to say that roe deer don’t like fenced areas. Period! Red stags and fallow back are acting ok, again if they do not interact too much with human rangers and mouflon sheep act very good like in the wild.

Is difficult ta give some tips and advises here on this matter. I hope, I was clear enough and everybody can take his own decision regarding hunting in the fenced area or not.
