One of the questions I receive most often from international hunters is:
“Where should I go if I want to hunt a truly exceptional roe buck in Romania?”
There is no simple answer. Romania has excellent roe deer hunting across the country, but not every region offers the same genetics, landscapes, prices, or chances of harvesting a record-class trophy.
After guiding hunters and hunting roe bucks myself for many years, here is my personal opinion about Romania’s main trophy roe deer regions.
Western Romania – The Land of Giant Trophies
If your only goal is to shoot the biggest roe buck possible, Western Romania should be at the top of your list.
The counties of Arad, Timiș and Bihor (historically known as the Banat region) have produced some of Romania’s finest trophies for decades. Harvesting bucks with trophies exceeding 450 grams net is relatively common, and every season several bucks surpass the 500-gram mark.
Another advantage is the professionalism of the local hunting organizations. Roe deer populations are high, hunting quotas are generous, and guides spend a great deal of time in the field. They know their territories exceptionally well.
The only downside, at least in my opinion, is the scenery. Much of the hunting takes place in vast agricultural plains. While productive, these landscapes can feel repetitive compared to other parts of Romania.
Prices are also among the highest in the country, with most outfitters using sliding-scale trophy fees that increase significantly with trophy weight.
Transylvania – Beautiful Hunting Grounds and Heavy Trophies
The second major roe deer region is Transylvania, particularly the counties of Mureș, Alba, Sibiu, and Cluj.
This is probably the most picturesque part of Romania for roe deer hunting. Rolling hills, forests, meadows, and traditional villages create a spectacular setting for a stalking hunt.
The trophy quality is excellent. Bucks from Mureș and Alba are especially well known for producing dense, heavy antlers, while Cluj and Sibiu also offer very respectable trophies.
The only drawback is, once again, the price. Large trophy bucks command premium fees, and exceptional trophies can become quite expensive.
Satu Mare – Excellent Value for Money
Satu Mare County, in northwestern Romania, is sometimes overlooked by international hunters, but I believe it deserves more attention.
If your dream is a world-record roe buck, this probably wouldn’t be my first recommendation. Although the roe deer population is very healthy, the average trophy weight tends to be slightly lower than in Banat or southern Romania.
Bucks between 450 and 500 grams are certainly achievable, and with some luck you may even find one between 500 and 550 grams. Trophies above 550 grams, however, are rare.
What makes this region stand out is the value it offers. Hunting costs are considerably lower, the landscapes are far more varied than in western Romania, and, in my experience, the local guides are among the best I have ever hunted with. Their knowledge, dedication, and work ethic are truly impressive.
Southern Romania – Exceptional Genetics at Reasonable Prices
Finally, we come to southern Romania, particularly the counties of Olt, Teleorman, and Vâlcea.
Many hunters are surprised to learn that this region has produced some of the finest roe buck trophies ever harvested in Romania. In fact, nearly half of Romania’s Top 10 roe bucks originate from this part of the country.
Unfortunately, Teleorman has experienced a decline in roe deer numbers in recent years, largely due to the rapid expansion of the golden jackal population after the species naturally spread across the border from Bulgaria.
However, the hunting grounds around Slatina, in Olt County, continue to produce outstanding trophies while maintaining very reasonable prices compared to western Romania.

All trophy fees are based on the official net CIC weight, measured 24 hours after boiling, with the standard deduction of 90 grams for the upper skull.
So, Where Would I Go?
If money were no object and my only goal was to harvest the biggest roe buck possible, I would probably choose Banat.
If I wanted to combine excellent trophy quality with spectacular scenery and no budget problem, Transylvania would be my destination.
If I were looking for the best balance between trophy potential and price, I would seriously consider Olt County.
And if I simply wanted an enjoyable hunt with experienced guides and outstanding value for money, Satu Mare would be very difficult to beat.
The truth is that Romania remains one of the best roe deer hunting destinations in Europe. Whether your goal is a medal-class trophy or simply an unforgettable stalking experience, there is a region that will suit both your expectations and your budget.
