We have two main seasons for brown bear bait hunting in Romania: spring and fall. Both periods can produce exceptional trophies, but the behavior of the bears, the hunting conditions, and the strategy are very different. Understanding these differences is essential for every hunter who plans a bear hunt in the Carpathians.
The Hunt in Spring
The spring season usually starts in March, and the best period is from the end of March through most of April. At this time bears have just come out of winter and natural food is still scarce. They are hungry and visit bait points regularly and often earlier in the evening, when there is still daylight.
After late April the situation changes. Bears begin to search for females and their movement becomes less predictable. Another important detail is that female bears rarely come to bait points, so the chance of meeting a mature boar is much higher.
How the Hunt Takes Place for brown bear bait hunting in Romania
Shooting distance on Romanian bait hunts is usually between 30 and 60 meters. Most bait sites are prepared for the use of thermal scopes, but in some locations we have solar panels and low-light systems, which allow the hunter to use a normal optic as well.
In spring the bears normally arrive earlier, often before full darkness. As a general rule, smaller bears tend to come first, followed later by the dominant boars — although nature is never 100% predictable.
In the fall the rhythm is different: bears usually come later, after dark, because during the day they still find plenty of natural food in the forest.
Spring Bears vs Fall Bears
Each season has its advantages:
- Spring: better quality skin, thick winter coat, beautiful color
- Fall: bigger body size and heavier weight
In spring the bait is extremely attractive because natural food is limited. In fall the forest offers more food, but bears must feed heavily to prepare for winter, so high-quality bait still brings them in with confidence.
Shot Placement and Tracking
After the first shot it is very important that the hunter makes a second shot immediately. A bear can run far even with a fatal bullet, and it is always safer to have two solid hits rather than one.
Experienced hunters know the so-called “death sound.” It is similar to the sound made by an African buffalo when it expires. If we hear that, we can relax — the bear is down and recovery will be quick.
If we do not hear this sound, we normally wait until the next day. Tracking a wounded bear in thick Carpathian forest at night is dangerous and unnecessary. With daylight we can follow the blood trail safely with our professional guides and dogs.
Using Trail Cameras and Area Selection
Trail cameras are a key part of our management. They show us exactly which bait points are visited by the biggest bears and at what time. This allows us to place each hunter on the stand with the highest potential and to be honest about expectations.

After the Hunt – Trophy Preparation
Once the bear is recovered, our guides take care of everything:
- skinning the bear
- boiling and cleaning the skull
- preparing the trophy for export
The CITES certificate issued by the Romanian Ministry of Environment normally takes up to three months.
- For hunters from the European Union, the process is simple and inexpensive.
- For US hunters, a licensed trophy broker is required, which adds some cost to shipping and paperwork.
The dried skin and bleached skull are then shipped directly to your taxidermist.
