Wolves hunting in Romania

The summer is almost over and the fall is about the begin. It was the time when, 7 years ago(in 2016), I was gathering the information all over Romania, for my favorite hunt, the wolves hunt. Over the years, I shot and killed 8 wolves in my life. Legally! Plus countless wolves hunt that I guided for my clients.
I will not tell you the stories with all my wolves hunt that I killed. The article will be way too large for a blog.
Instead of this i will tell you the best 3 ways of wolves hunting from what i experienced in the past.

  1. Bait hunt!

Is it the most common, but less successful way for wolf hunt. Now I will tell you a trick that will improve your success rate a lot. I mean A LOT, if the terrain permit and you will do it exactly how I say.
Here is what you have to do. Instead of putting a death deer or some bloody meat in the usual place where you use to bait the wolves, kill one or better two roe deer(or a white tail deer if you are from USA) and drag the body for many miles, making a track that will end near your blind. Tide the deer behind your car and cross the roads. Ideally is to have a blood line on the tracks, so cut the belly of your deer. If the wolf will cross the track he will act like a bloodhound following the trail near your blind. The rest depends on you…

  1. Driven hunt:

If you are an European hunter, you already know that driven hunts are along the most popular hunts. Once in a while, the wolves are killed during those hunts. But we all know that the driven hunts are made for wild boars rather than wolves. So how can we kill wolves in a driven hunt. Can we make a driven hunt especially for wolves?
Well, yes, but is not quite a driven hunt as we know it.
Probably many of you are thinking that I will tell you about the flag driven hunt, that is very common in Russia. I never experienced that, so I can only guess that it will work, but right now I am gonna tell you a secret that very few will believe. This is a strange driven hunt that will need one, maximum 2 beaters and one hunter.
But for this you will need a good tracker and fresh snow.
In Romania most wolves are living in sub-mountains areas, hilly areas with large corps of forests. In the nights with fresh snow, the pack of wolves are always moving from one forest to another. I don’t know why, but this is the true.
So, early morning a good tracker will track the footprints of the pack.
Now, the secret…post the hunter or hunters near the entrance tracks in the forest. Make sure the wind is blowing in your favor. That means the pack of wolves will nor smell you.
The one or two beaters will come toward you from the opposite part making small noises. It is important they don’t make big noises like yelling and screaming. The wolves should feel disturbed not afraid.
In this case the pack of wolves will always come back on the same track as they enter into the forest. Nd there will wait the hunters.

  1. Waiting near the fresh kill, best strategy in wolves hunting

The last but the most successful way of wolves hunting is waiting bear the fresh kill. Usually a red stag body. You will tell me is hard to know when the wolves are killing but in Romania each hunting area has a ranger. The duty of the rangers in the area with wolves is to check the area every morning looking for the fresh kill.
Once you locate a fresh kill from last night, all you have have to do is to post yourself in the vicinity of the death body, of course making sure the wind is in your favor. 99% the wolves will come back in the first night and if not you can be sure 100% they will come back the second night

Important piece of advice, after the rifle, the most important tool in wolves hunting is the wind checker!

Good luck!
