There is nothing as satisfying as watching a well-trained retrieving, pointing, and flushing or scent dog at work for a grey partridge hunt. Once regarded as a classic aristocratic hunt, shooting over dogs has now become one of the most fulfilling hunts available to all hunters.

Romania was gifted with large numbers of partridges, especially in the South of Romania. Unlike pheasants, these birds are all built for camouflage rather than color, it is hard to tell the difference between a male and a hen partridge, especially if you are not a professional hunter.

A SHORT DESCRIPTION OF GREY PARTRIDGES (Perdix perdix)

Grey Partridge prefer areas of open farmland. They will use field margins, arable crops and grass leys for cover and feeding habitat. Their food source includes grass and cereal shoots, seeds, knotgrass, black bindweed, common hemp nettle and chickweed. Chicks require insects for the first two weeks of life.

They will nest in well hidden hedge bottoms, grass banks, game cover, cereals and nettle beds. Dead tussocky grass left over from previous years is particularly favored as nesting cover. Eggs will be laid starting with April.

THE HUNT

The hunt is a walk-up shooting adventure in the picturesque landscapes of southern Romania, where the “Rolls Royce” of European gamebirds, the grey partridge, awaits. This champagne shooting experience is characterized by the use of our skilled German Short hair Pointers, enhancing the traditional charm of the pursuit. Of course, you can bring your own dog, or dogs, we can accommodate up to 6 dogs.

The grey partridge, found in coveys ranging from five to twenty birds, sometimes even more, showcases its elusive nature by remaining steadfast for pointers and flushing in singles, pairs, or as an entire covey. This captivating hunt takes place in the unspoiled terrains of southern Romania, set against the backdrop of breathtaking vistas and the rich history of the region.

An average level of fitness is an advantage. It can be described as challenging by some, but it is extremely rewarding to the enthusiastic wingshooter. You can expect to walk more than 7 miles or 10 kilometers per day. You will experience classic shooting to bag the fastest upland gamebird in Europe, while observing endless vistas.

PROGRAM

A typical day will commence with an early morning breakfast after which we will depart for the day’s shooting. Transportation to the shooting grounds will be by means of a 4WD vehicle. Shooting commences on arrival in the field until noon. The hunters can choose from a hearty field lunch or a nice lunch at the hotel. Guns will resume the shoot at around 4.30 pm. The day’s shoot will conclude during the afternoon with a photo session of the day’s bag. A mouth-watering dinner will be served at 7.30 pm and the day’s excitement will be relived around a comfortable fireplace until bedtime.

DURATION

A typical trip for grey partridge hunt takes place for 3 full hunting days and 4 nights. International sportsmen and women can combine a grey partridge with some of our other birds or/and touristic options.

GEAR

The best time for partridge hunt ins the whole mount of October. The temperature are very pleasant, so light but water proof clothes are a must. Also waterproof ankle comfortable boots are essential. The mornings and late afternoons will be chilly; therefore dressing in layers is advisable. Sunblock, a shooting cap, eye and ear protection, as well as a shooting vest, is recommended for an enjoyable shoot.

GUNS AND AMMO

12 or 20 gauge over/under shotguns are usually used for this hunt but semiautomatic shotguns will be allowed on grey partridge hunts as well.
Shot in size No.5(2.9 mm) will be supplied to hunters. This combination is ideal for grey partridge hunting in our areas.

CONSERVATION

As these are totally wild populations of partridges, no more than 10% of a population is harvested per hunting season. Hunters can expect to flush between 60 and 300 birds per day and a bag of between 20 and 30 birds depending on the number of guns and level of shooting. Smaller groups are preferred. Three guns being the minimum size group, six being maximum. The birds can be cock for clients while on the trip, while the excess is frozen and can be take home.
